Huntley, IL – August 29, 2025 – In a landmark initiative that reinforces the community’s commitment to recreation, open space preservation, and intergovernmental collaboration, the Village of Huntley and the Huntley Park District announce the acquisition of approximately 153 acres of land through a combination of purchase and donation. The Village intends to sell to the District an approximately 7.64-acre portion of the property for $1 million, and to donate the remaining ±145 acres. The property is located on the south side of Kreutzer Road, just west of the railroad crossing.

This partnership supports the long-term goals outlined in the Village’s Strategic Plan and the Park District’s Strategic Master Plan, and this land acquisition directly achieves a goal of the recently passed Huntley Park District Bond Referendum in 2024. It also reflects both agencies’ dedication to enhancing quality of life, promoting livability, and encouraging sustainable development.

“By working together, we are ensuring that this land remains a community asset for generations to come,” said Village President Timothy J. Hoeft. “It is an investment in Huntley’s future. This reflects the Village’s ongoing commitment to preserving open space while creating a vibrant and connected community. Working together with the Park District, we are ensuring future generations will enjoy expanded recreation, public gathering spaces, and the natural beauty of our environment.”

“This is an exciting step forward for our community,” said Huntley Park District Board President Keith Wold. “We are proud to work alongside the Village to bring more opportunities for residents of all ages. These opportunities may include new trails, special events, and the potential for indoor recreation facilities. This is a win for Huntley.”

While originally approved for 430 homes in 2007 when the property was brought into Village limits, the property will now provide space for expanded recreational amenities. These may include a potential indoor aquatic center, fitness area, and indoor walking track, which were identified as priorities by Huntley residents.  It is envisioned that the site could be the location for large-scale community events.

Results from the 2025 National Community Survey highlight strong community support for these efforts. Parks and Recreation were identified by 84% of respondents as essential or very important to Huntley’s livability. The quality of local recreation opportunities was rated excellent or good by 88% of respondents, a result that exceeds national benchmarks. In addition, 75% of residents rated Huntley’s open space positively, underscoring the importance of preserving natural areas and expanding access to outdoor amenities.

Initial development of the new recreational space is expected to begin in 2026, pending grant funding. The property transaction may take place as early as September 2025. The Village and Park District will continue to engage the community to help shape the long-term vision for the site. The Huntley Park District will be hosting a Public Input Meeting to gather feedback from the community on the phase one development of the site on Wednesday, September 10 at 6:00p.m. at the REC Center, 12015 Mill St., Huntley, IL.  This collaborative acquisition demonstrates how strategic partnerships and thoughtful planning can meet the evolving needs of residents and contribute to Huntley’s long-term success.
