HS League Q & A:

Why are there no practice times?

The league is modeled after intramural leagues that used to exist at many high schools and that currently exist at colleges and universities across the country.  In all of those leagues, practice time was/is not included because of available time and space issues at the facilities.  The only practicing that teams do is what they are able to do on their own during open gym times.  We have extremely limited open gym times and have an open gym policy that states the drop in fee for open gym is $5 per person.  Open gym is included in our fitness center memberships which have a monthly student rate of $13 per month (after an initial $25 joining fee).

We did have limited practice opportunities in past seasons because free space was available, but the growth of all of our leagues has eliminated that free space more and more in recent seasons.

What does our league fee of $500 cover?

Referees:  $30 per game per ref X 2 refs per game X 12 games per team (10 season and minimum of two tournament)  / 2 teams per game = $360

Scorekeepers:   $8 per game X 12 games per team / 2 teams per game = $48

Building Supervisor:  $10 per hour X 1.25 hours per game X 12 games per team / 4 teams per game time = $37.50

The sum of the above is $445.50 and does not include each team’s contributions to awards, building operations (ex. utilities), supplies, later tournament rounds, administrative time, etc.

Why are teams responsible for their own uniforms?

Some teams want to spend a lot, and others just want t-shirts.  Either is fine, and this system allows each team the freedom to choose what they want to wear and how much to spend.

As a comparison our 7th/8th grade in-house players pay $85 each to play on a team with 10 total players.  In essence the 7th/8th grade league costs $850 per team, which does include uniforms and one hour practice time per week.  If we were to include practice time and uniforms, plus the $10 more per game that the officials cost, the high school league fees would end up at around $900 per team.
